India vs West Indies: 1st ODI    Scorecard

It was in course of a casual dinner, shortly before the third Test, that coach John Wright told us of his plans to try out Ajit Agarkar as a floater at number three.

Wright is looking ahead, to the World Cup. The usual Indian combination of two seam, two spin, and assorted folks pitching in as fifth bowler will not work in South Africa, he believes -- "30 overs of spin over there is a nightmare," is how he put it.

One of the options he is considering, thus, is to bring in an extra seamer in the guise of a bowling all-rounder who, when needed, can pinch hit at the top. The game now on is a classic example -- an early wicket, and in comes Agarkar. As per plan, if this was the World Cup and Sehwag and Ganguly had gotten India off to a sizeable start, it would have been Sachin Tendulkar walking in at three.

The underlying thought is experimentation for now, with a view to trying out various gameplans ahead of the big occasion.
