India vs West Indies - Second ODI at Nagpur

Mohandas Menon

  • Sourav Ganguly (78) when on 34, became the third Indian (after Sachin Tendulkar 11544 runs and M Azharuddin 9378) and the ninth overall to reach 8000 runs in LOIs. By reaching this landmark in his 208th match and 200th innings, he becomes the quickest batsman to reach this landmark in both least matches and innings in LOI history. He beat the previous record held by teammate Sachin Tendulkar, who need 217 matches and 210 innings to reach his 8000th run in 1999.

  • The 128 run partnership between Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman was the best for India against the West Indies for the 3rd wicket. The pair betters the previous best of 120 runs between Kris Srikkanth and Dilip Vengsarkar at Sharjah on 16-10-1988. The partnership also betters the best for the third wicket at this venue, which was the 98 runs put on by New Zealanders Nathan Astle and Stephen Fleming against the home team on 26-11-1985.

  • The partnership of 105 runs between Laxman and Rahul Dravid was India's best for the fifth wicket at this ground. The pair obliterates the previous best of 76 runs put on by Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri against Pakistan on 24-3-1987.

  • Laxman (99) when on 54, became the 20th Indian batsman and the 168th in LOIs to reach a career aggregate of 1000 runs. He now has 1045 runs in 43 matches and 41 innings.

  • Laxman became the only second Indian batsman after Kris Srikkanth (against England at Cuttack on 27-12-1984) to miss out on a LOI hundred by one run. Laxman, in fact becomes the 15th batsman in LOIs to make a register a score of 99 runs.

  • Incidentally, Laxman's 99 is the highest score made by a batsman, not making a three figure score against the West Indies in LOIs. The previous highest score being the 98, which was achieved twice by Indian Navjot Singh Sidhu (at Sharjah on 19-10-1991) and Australian Adam Gilchrist (at Brisbane, 14-1-2001).

  • For the record, Tendulkar (93 v South Africa on 19-3-2000) was the only other batsman to register a score in the ninety at this ground.

  • The 3-55 in 9 overs Vasbert Drakes was his best performance in LOIs. Playing in his 9th match he bettered his previous best of 1-36 (in 7 overs) against Australia at Arnos Vale way back on 15-3-1995.

  • The 134 run partnership between Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuel was the best by any visiting team at this venue for the 2nd wicket. The pair betters the 128 runs put on by New Zealand's Astle and Martin Crowe on 26-11-1995.

  • Gayle's 103 was his second highest score of his career in 54 matches. His best still remains as the 152 he made against Kenya at Simba Union ground at Nairobi on 15-8-2001. However his 103 is now his highest against a Test playing nation. He had made a 85 against Zimbabwe at Kandy on 16-12-2001.

  • Gayle claimed his sixth man of the match award in 54 matches.
