India vs West Indies - Third ODI at Rajkot

Mohandas Menon

  • Playing in his 105th match, Ridley Jacobs became the 16th player to captain the West Indies in LOIs. He, in fact, became the third keeper to captain the Caribbean team in LOIs. The other being: Deryck Murray (in 2 matches on 22-2-1978 and 9-12-1979) and Jeff Dujon (1 match in 15-3-1990). However Jacobs remains the only one to have lost the match.

  • The 149 run partnership between Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul was the West Indies' best against India for the 4th wicket bettering the previous best of 126 runs between Carl Hooper and Jimmy Adams at Jaipur on 11-11-1994.

  • This was in fact the West Indies' joint second highest for the fourth wicket against any team in LOIs. Chanderpaul and Hooper had put on 226 against South Africa at East London on 24-1-1999, while Clive Lloyd and Rohan Kanhai had also put on 149 against Australia at Lord's during the famous 1975 World Cup final.

  • The Sarwan-Chanderpaul stand was briefly the highest for any wicket at this venue. The previous best was the 122 for the opening wicket between Indians Manoj Prabhakar and Navjo Singh Sidhu against Sri Lanka on 15-2-1994. The previous best for the 4th wicket at this venue was the unbroken poartnership of 87 runs put on by Australians Greg Rithie and Allan Border against India on 7-10-1986.

  • However, the 196 run partnership between Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag soon became the highest partnership by any pair for any wicket at this ground. The previous best between West Indians Sarwan and Chanderpaul lasted just a few hours.

  • The above partnership was also the India's best for any wicket against the West Indies. The previous best was the 176, which was also for the first wicket - between Ajay Jadeja and Sachin Tendulkar at Cuttack on 9-11-1994.

  • Though the above partnership was India's fourth highest for the first wicket in LOIs, it is now India's highest for any home LOI match. The previous best was the 188 between Ravi Shastri and Kris Srikkanth against England at Cuttack on 27-12-1984.

  • The Ganguly-Sehwag stand was the third highest ever for any wicket and the second best for the first wicket by any team against the West Indies in LOIs. Englishmen Graeame Hick and Neil Fairbrother had put on 213 for the 3rd wicket at Lord's on 27-5-1991 and Australians Adam Gilchrist and Mark Waugh put on 206 for the first wicket at Brisbane on 14-1-2001.

  • Ganguly (72) became the second batsman, after South African Herschelle Gibbs (1034 in 27 matches) to reach 1000 runs for this calendar year in 2002. Ganguly, now has 1019 runs in 28 matches in this year.

  • Virender Sehwag's 75-ball hundred equals the fastest ever at this venue, which was achieved by West Indian Viv Richards, during his knock on 110 not out against the home side on 5-1-1988.

  • Sehwag's hundred was the second quickest against the West Indies after the 67-ball hundred by Pakistani Basit Ali (127 not out) at Sharjah on 5-11-1993.
