India vs West Indies - Fourth ODI at Ahmedabad

  • The catch of Wavell Hinds was Rahul Dravid's 100th of his career, both as a fielder and keeper in 186 matches. Dravid in 28 matches now has 24 catches, while keeping wickets, and has 76 catches as a fielder in 158 matches. The only other Indians to take 100-plus catches are: 156 (as a fielder) by Mohammad Azharuddin and 110 (as a keeper) by Nayan Mongia.

  • The partnership of 148 runs between Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan was the best for the West Indies against India for the 3rd wicket. The pair obliterates the previous best of 112 runs put on between Brian Lara and Carl Hooper at Madras on 23-10-1994.

  • The above partnership was also the best at this venue for the 3rd wicket bettering the previous best of 78 runs between West Indians Richie Richardson and Keith Arthurton against the home team on 16-11-1993.

  • Chris Gayle's 140 was now the highest by a West Indian batsman for a losing side. The previous highest score under such circumstances was the 122 by Richie Richardson against Pakistan at Sharjah on 21-10-1991.

  • Sarwan became the only second West Indian batsman after Richie Richardson (against Pakistan at Sharjah on 15-11-1985) to miss out on a LOI hundred by one run. Richardson too was unbeaten on 99. Sarwan, in fact becomes the 16th batsman in LOIs to make a register a score of 99 runs and the sixth to remain unbeaten on that score.

  • During this series Sarwan has been progressively improving his personal best scores of his career - 83 not out at Jamshedpur (6-11-2002), 84 at Rajkot (12-11-2002) and now this unbeaten 99 at Ahmedabad.

  • Sarwan now has 772 runs @ a batting average of 48.25 in 23 matches. Only Australian Michael Bevan (avg 54.78, 5807 runs) and Indian Mohmmad Kaif (avg 52.75, 633 runs) have better batting averages than Sarwan, among those who have aggregated more than 500 runs in LOIs.

  • During his brief knock of 28 runs, Sourav Ganguly became the highest run-getter in LOIs during this calendar year. He went past the aggregate of 1034 runs (in 27 matches) by South African Herschelle Gibbs. The Indian skipper now has 1047 runs in 29 matches in 2002.

  • Yuvraj Singh (30, when on 12) became the 21st Indian and the 169th overall to aggregate 1000 career runs in LOIs. He was appearing in his 49th match and playing his 40th innings. He now has 1018 runs (avg. 29.09). Incidentally, Yuvraj is the only fourth Indian left-hander to achieve this landmark, after Sourav Ganguly (8144 runs), Vinod Kambli (2477) and Robin Singh (2338).

  • The two catches by Carl Hooper has taken his tally of catches to 112 in 218 matches for the West Indies. Now only Indian Mohammad Azharuddin (156 catches in 334 matches) and Australian Allan Border (127 in 273) have more catches as a fielder than Hooper in LOIs. Hooper in this match went past the tally of 111 catches (in 325 matches) by Australian Steve Waugh.

  • The match winning unbeaten partnership of 94 runs between Rahul Dravid and Sanjay Bangar was the best at this venue for the sixth wicket bettering the previous best of 52 runs between West Indians Carl Hooper and Eldine Baptiste against India on 7-1-1988.

  • India's win was the third best for any team chasing huge targets after Australia's (330-7) defeat of South Africa (326-3) at Port Elizabeth on 6-4-2002 and India's (326-8) win over England (325-5) at Lord's 13-7-2002.

  • Incidentally India's total of 325-5 was the highest team score made under lights in LOIs. The previous best was England's 306-5 against Pakistan at Karachi on 24-10-2000.

  • India provided the 10th instance of a team successfully chasing targets exceeding in LOIs. Including the Rajkot match, India has been involved in such wins on maximum occasions - five. Australia and Sri Lanka - have done this on two occasions, while England has done it once.

  • For the record, the previous highest team total while batting second against the West Indies to win a match was the 297-5 by South Africa while chasing West Indies' 293-8 at Lahore on 3-11-1997.

  • The match aggreagte of 649 runs was the second best on Indian soil after the 655 run match aggregate achieved jointly by New Zealand (349-9) and India (306) at Rajkot on 5-11-1999. Incidentally the Ahmedabad match now occupies the ninth position among matches with highest run aggregates in LOIs.
