India vs West Indies - Fifth ODI at Vadodara

Tamil Nadu's pace bowler Lakshmipathy Balaji became the 147th player to appear for India in LOIs.

Yuvraj Singh was appearing in his 50th LOI match since his first in 2000. He becomes the 30th Indian and the 244th overall to reach this landmark.

Playing in his 187th match and 171th innings Rahul Dravid became the 22nd batsman in LOIs to reach the milestone of 6000 runs. He also becomes the fourth Indian after Sachin Tendulkar (11544), M Azharuddin (9378) and Sourav Ganguly (8197) to reach this landmark. Dravid now has 6003 runs to his credit.

The first wicket stand of 132 runs between Chris Gayle and Wavell Hinds was the best by an visiting team at this venue bettering the previous best of 121 runs between Zimbabweans Alistair Campbell and Grant Flower against the home team 5-4-1998.

Chris Gayle became the second West Indian (after Desmond Haynes v Australia in 1983-84) to record three centuries in a single series/tournament. In fact Gayle becomes the only seventh batsman after - Pakistani Zaheer Abbas (in 1982-83), Englishman David Gower (in 1982-83), Haynes (see above), Pakistani Saeed Anwar (in 1993-94), Australia Mark Waugh (in 1995-96 & 2000-01) and Graeme Hick (in 1998-99) - to achieve this feat. Incidentally Zaheer Abbas in 1982-83 was the only other batsman to do so against India,

Gayle's series aggregate of 423 runs in 5 matches, is now by far the highest by any batsman in a series against India. Former West Indian opener Gordon Greenidge had made 353 in 5 matches in 1983-84 in India.

The unbeaten partnership of 52 runs between Ricardo Powell and Carl Hooper was the best at this venue for the sixth wicket surpassing the previous best of 45 runs between Holland's Klaas-Jan van Nortwijk and Roland Lefebvre against New Zealand on 17-2-1998.

India registered its highest losing total (290-8) while batting first. Its previous highest score had been the 287-4 it made against South Africa (287-4) at the Nehru Stadium at New Delhi on 14-11-1991.

Meanwhile, this was West Indies' second highest winning score made while batting second. Their highest such score still remains as the 292-6 it made against New Zealand (291-8) at Arnos Vale recently on 16-6-2002.

This was the home team's first loss at this ground in four matches. India had also won two matches out of the three at the other ground in Vadodara - the Motibaug Palace Grounds.
