India vs West Indies - First Test, day 4

Mohandas Menon

  • Ridley Jacobs became the fourth West Indian batsman to bag a pair (ducks in each innings) against India. Joe Solomon (at Kingston in April 1962), wicket-keeper Deryck Murray (at Bangalore in November 1974) and Gus Logie (at Ahmedabad in November 1983) were the others.

  • Incidentally, Jacobs now becomes the second visiting batsman to bag a pair at this ground after Englishman Norman Cowans in November 1984.

  • Harbhajan Singh's 7-48 equals the best bowling figures at this ground. He equals Englishman Ian Botham's figures of 7-48 during the Jubilee Test match in February 1980. However his figures are now the best by an Indian bowler at this venue. Former leggie Laxman Sivaramakrishnan had figures of 6-64 against England in November 1984.

  • Though Harbhajan's bowling performance was the fourth best by an Indian spinner against the West Indies after 9-102 by leg-spinner Subhash Gupte (at Kanpur in 1958) and the 8-61 & 8-75 by another leggie Narendra Hirwani (at Chepauk in 1988), it was the best by an Indian off-spinner against the West Indies bettering the previous best of 5-70 by EAS Prasanna at Chepauk in January 1975.

  • Meanwhile, Harbhajan's performance was the second best by an off-spinner against the West Indies. Former Australian captain and off-spinner Ian Johnson had figures of 7-44 at Georgetown in April 1955. However it should be mentioned that Englishman Tony Greig had taken 8-86 against the West Indies at Port Spain, in April 1974, while bowling off-cutters.

  • For the record, the previous best off-spin bowling performance against the West Indies in an away Test match, was held by Australian Bruce Yardley at Sydney in January 1982 when he claimed 7-98. Now Harbhajan has the best figures.

  • Harbhajan's eight wickets in this match has taken his tally to 46 in 9 matches for this calendar year of 2002. Now only Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan (48 wickets in 6 matches) has more Test wickets in 2002.

  • The victory by an innings and 112 runs was India's third biggest in Tests after its innings and 219 runs win against Australia at Calcutta in March 1998 and the innings and 119 runs win against Sri Lanka at Lucknow in January 1994.

  • This was the first victory for India by an innings against the West Indies in Tests. India's biggest ever win before this one came at Chepauk in January 1988 when the home side won by 255 runs.

  • This was the highest victory margin by any team at this ground. The home team had beaten Australia by an innings & 100 runs in November 1979.

  • This was West Indies' ninth loss in a row in the sub-continent (including Sharjah). The team had lost 3-0 in Pakistan (in November-December 1997), lost 3-0 in Sri Lanka (in November-December 2001) and then went down 0-2 to Pakistan in Sharjah (in February 2002).

  • This was West Indies' 24th loss in 28 away matches since November 1997. During this period the team has won just two matches, while two matches were drawn.
