India vs West Indies - Second Test, day 1

Mohandas Menon

  • David Shepherd was officiating in his 66th Test match since making his debut as a Test umpire in 1985. He now equals the English record held by former colleague Dickie Bird, who from 1973 to 1996, had also officiated in 66 Test matches. Now only West Indian Steve Bucknor has stood in more Tests (71) than Shepherd.

  • Gareth Breese & Jermaine Lawson became the 244th and 245th players to represent West Indies in Tests.

  • At 20 years 277 days, Lawson became the third youngest West Indian to make Test debut in India after Malcolm Marshall (20 years 241 days at Bangalore in 1978) and Roger Harper (20 years 268 days at Calcutta in 1983).

  • Incidentally, Lawson became the second youngest visiting player after Pakistani Ijaz Ahmed (18 years 136 days in 1987) to make Test debut at this ground.

  • Playing in his 75th Test match, Anil Kumble, on his 32nd birthday, claimed his 20th five-plus wicket haul of his career.

  • This was Kumble's third such haul against the Windies. His earlier two 5-wkt hauls came in the West Indies during the 1997 tour - 5-104 at Port of Spain and 5-102 at Kingston. His previous best against this team at home was the 4-51 in the first Test of this series at Mumbai.

  • The wicket of Ryan Hinds was Kumble's 220th on Indian soil in 38 matches, which takes him past the record tally of 219 wickets in 65 matches held by Kapil Dev, thus making him the highest Test wicket-taker on Indian soil. Kumble now has 222 wickets at home.

  • Meanwhile the three wickets by Harbhajan Singh takes his tally to 49 for this calendar year of 2002 in 10 matches. He now goes past the tally of 48 wickets in 6 matches for this calendar year held by Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan. Incidentally teammate Kumble now has 45 wickets in 9 matches in 2002.

  • The last time the Indian bowlers dismissed the opponent for less than 200 runs on the opening day of a Test match was against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo in June last year. The home team was then dismissed for 173 runs in 58.5 overs. The Indian bowlers had also claimed all ten English wickets in the first day of the Mohali Test match in December last year. However the Englishmen managed to score 238 runs in 76.3 overs.

  • For the record, the last occasion India managed to dismiss the entire West Indian side on the first day of a Test match came at this very ground way back on 12 January 1979. The visitors were then dismissed for 228 in 72.5 overs.
