India vs West Indies - Second Test, day 3

Mohandas Menon

  • Javagal Srinath's 39 was the highest by an Indian number nine against the West Indies at this venue bettering the unbeaten 35 by Karsan Ghavri during the 1974-75 series.

  • Incidentally Srinath's 39 was the third highest by an Indian number 9 at this venue. Only S Venkataraghavan (64 against New Zealand in November 1976) and Roger Binny (42 not out against Pakistan in January 1980), among Indians, have higher individual scores while batting at number nine position at the Chepauk.

  • The stumping of Parthiv Patel was Ridley Jacobs' seventh of his career. This is the first time he has effected a stumping of his opposite number and also this was his first stumped victim who was a left-handed batsman.

  • The wicket of Gayle was Srinath's 41st duck victim, out of the 236 wickets he now has to his credit. This means 17.37% of his victims have been dismissed for a duck. This is now the second best by an Indian bowler in Tests after former left-arm slow bowler Salim Durrani who had 14 such victims out of 75 wickets, which represents a percentage of 18.66 of dismissals of batsman for a duck. For the record, Sachin Tendulkar has a healthy percentage of 18.52 (5 duck victims out of 27 wickets) in this category.

  • The 96 run partnership between Wavell Hinds and Ramnaresh Sarwan was the best for the 2nd wicket for the West Indies at this ground, which obliterates the previous best of 80 runs between Jeff Stollmeyer and Clyde Walcott during the 1948-49 series. In fact, the Hinds-Sarwan partnership was also the best for the West Indies in this city. The pair also bettered the previous best of 91 runs between Jack Holt and Rohan Kanhai at the Corporation Stadium in 1958-59.

  • The wicket of Wavell Hinds was Harbhajan's 50th for the calendar year. He now becomes the first bowler to do so in 2002. This was the second time he is achieving this feat. During the calendar year of 2001 Harbhajan in 12 matches had captured 60 wickets (avg. 25.95).

  • The 72 run partnership between Sarwan and Carl Hooper just failed to better West Indies' best for the 4th wicket at this ground. The pair could not better the 79 runs stand between Kanhai and Clive Lloyd during the 1966-67 series.
