India vs West Indies - Second Test, day 4

The catch of Gareth Breese was Sourav Ganguly's 50th of his career in 64 matches. He becomes the 9th Indian and the 74th fieldsman overall in Tests to reach this landmark.

The fifty run partnership in the second innings by the Sanjay Bangar and Virender Sehwag meant that this was the only second time Indian openers have managed to put on 50-plus partnerships in each innings at this ground. The pair had put on 93 in the first innings. The other Indian pair to so is Sunil Gavaskar & Kris Srikkanth against Australia during the famous tied Test match in September 1986, when they put on 62 & 55 in each innings.

Carl Hooper (2-32) recorded his best bowling figures of his career as a captain in his 21st match. His previous best bowling performance was the 2-44 against the Kiwis at Grenada in June this year. Incidentally Hooper now has 20 wickets in 21 matches while leading the side.

Ganguly became the first captain to lead India to three wins against the West Indies. Nawab of Pataudi jr has led India to two victories against the Windies.

India's victory by eight wickets was its best in terms of wickets against the West Indies in Tests. It previous best was its seven wicket vicotry it achieved at Port of Spain in March 1971.

This was the only second time India were achieving a back-to-back win against the Windies. India had won the third and fourth Tests at Calcutta and Madras respectively during the 1974-75 series.

This was India's 11th win at this ground in 26 matches, which is by far the successful venue for the home side. For the record, India has won eight matches each at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi and at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

This was West Indies' seventh defeat on Indian soil in 39 matches. It has now lost four matches at Chepauk, two at the Wankhede Stadium and one at the Eden Gardens in Calcutta.

For the West Indies this was its tenth loss in a row in the sub-continent (including Sharjah), since November 1997. It was also West Indies' 25th loss in 29 away matches during this period.

This was India's only third series win against the West Indies in 17 attempts. India won the five match Test series in the Caribbean 1-0 in 1970-71 and then the six match Test series at home 1-0 in 1978-79.
