India vs West Indies - Third Test, day 2

Mohandas Menon

  • Parthiv Patel's 47 was his personal best bettering his previous best of 23 runs he made in the second Test at Chennai. This was his fifth Test and sixth innings of his career.

  • Patel at 17 years, 236 days missed the opportunity of becoming the youngest wicket keeper in Test history to register an individual fifty by just three runs when he was dismissed for 47 runs. This distinction still remains with Pakistani Hanif Mohammad who was 17 years & 302 days when he made a 51 against India at Delhi in October 1952, which incidentally was in his debut Test match. Patel, however still has a chance to better Hanif Mohammad if he records a fifty in the next two months (incidentally he has two more Test matches in New Zealand to achieve this feat).

  • The 73 run partnership between Patel and Javagal Srinath was the best against the West Indies at this venue for the 8th wicket bettering the previous best of 67 runs put on by Kapil Dev and Syed Kirmani in December 1983.

  • The 172 run partnership between Jamaicans Chris Gayle and Wavell Hinds was the best for the West Indies at this venue for the opening wicket bettering the previous best of 114 runs put on by Barbadians Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes in December 1987.

  • The above partnership was the second 100-plus partnership for the first wicket for Gayle and Hinds. Their only other 100-plus partnership also came against India at Kingston in May this year, when they put on 111 runs.

  • The Gayle-Hinds partnership was now the best opening stand by two left-handers against India. The previous best was the 159 runs put on by the two English left-handers Geoff Pullar and Peter Richardson at the Brabourne Stadium, Bombay in November 1961.

  • The West Indian pair also bettered the previous best partnership for any wicket by a left-handed pair at this ground. The previous best was the 163 runs for the 7th wicket between New Zealanders Bert Sutcliffe and Bruce Taylor in March 1965.

  • Harbhajan Singh has once again become the highest wicket-taker for the calendar year of 2002. His three wickets has now taken his tally of wickets to 56 in 11 matches, three more than Australian Shane Warne, who has 53 wickets in 7 matches in 2002.
