Jaffer slams 143 for Mumbai

Wasim Jaffer scored a hundred as defending champions Mumbai posted 236 for 3 against Andhra Pradesh on the opening day of their Ranji trophy Elite Group 'A' match at the IGMC Stadium in Vijaywada on Monday.

Electing to bat, Mumbai openers Vinayak Mane and Wasim Jaffer (143) put on 37 runs before Mane was caught behind by MSK Prasad off R V Ch Prasad.

Bhavin Thakkar and Wasim Jaffer then added 142 runs for the second wicket before Thakker was out, clean bowled by G Sankar Rao after scoring 47, which included four fours off 169 balls in 214 minutes.

Amol Mazumdar and Jaffer the added 56 runs for the third wicket before the latter was out after scoring 143 runs. He was caught in the slips by I Srinivas off M Suresh.

Jaffer's innings was studded with 13 fours and came off 236 balls in 374 minutes.

After 87.4 overs, the match was stopped due to bad light.

At the close of play Mazumdar (20) and Vinod Kambli (one) were at the crease.

R V Ch Prasad, G Sankara Rao and M Suresh took a wicket each.

Jaffer's 100 came off 170 balls with the help of 11 fours.
