A defiant half century by former India stumper Nayan Mongia (88 not out) was not enough to save the blushes for Baroda, who lost to Uttar Pradesh by an innings and seven runs in the Ranji Trophy 'Elite' Group 'A' match in Vadodara on Saturday.
The innings victory gave Uttar Pradesh five points, including a bonus point.
Resuming at their overnight score of 69 for four, Baroda were unable to come up with any substantial partnerships as the Uttar Pradesh spinners picked wickets at regular intervals.
Off-spinner Nikhil Chopra took four wickets for 75 runs while Pravin Gupta claimed three scalps for 50.
Needing to make at least 224 runs to make the visitors bat again, overnight not out batsman Mongia and Jacob Martin adopted a cautious approach before the latter was put.
Mongia then gathered 45 runs with Shatrunjay Gaekwad for the sixth wicket and 38 runs with Tushar Arothe (38) for the seventh but could not avoid the innings defeat.
But both teams were dissatisfied with the umpiring standards in the match with the Baroda Cricket Association submitting a formal complain to Match Referee E Y Puri, claiming that it cost the team dearly in both innings.
The manager of the Uttar Pradesh team, R R Mishra, also complained about poor quality of umpiring in the match.
Uttar Pradesh team coach Gapal Sharma expressing happiness at the performance of his boys said "the win had boosted their moral and they are now in a strong position in the 'Elite' 'A' group league table".
He said they will aim at scoring an outright win over Kerala in the next match in Trivandram.
