Maharashtra government announces panel to renegotiate Enron deal

The Maharashtra government on Monday named a nine-member committee headed by former bureaucrat Madhav Godbole to renegotiate the controversial power purchase agreement with US energy major Enron-promoted Dabhol Power Company.

The committee has been asked to submit its report within a month, an official announcement said.

The terms and references of the committee would include bringing down the power tariff, delinking of LNG facility, restructuring of Dabhol Power Company and allowing sale of excess power to Centre or its utilities.

The other members of the committee are HDFC chairman Deepak Parikh, Tata Energy Reasearch Institute director Rajendra K Pachauri, former union energy secretary E A S Sharma, Professor at Indira Gandhi Institute of Developmental Research Kirit Parikh, Maharashtra Principal energy secretary V M Lal, a representative of the Centre, finance secretary S K Shrivastava and Vinay Bansal, chairman of the Maharashtra State Electricity Board.

"Godbole has been chosen to head the renegotiation team as he knows each and every minute detail of the 2,184 mw Dabhol Power Project," official sources said.

Recently, Godbole, who headed the energy review committee, had submitted its report to the state government.

The secretarial assistance to the committee would be provided by Infrastructure Development Finance Company.
