In her first Subhash Ghai film, Taal, Ash, as middle-class Mansi falls in love with the rich Akshaye. Misunderstandings lead to the two parting ways, and she finds herself being pursued by Anil Kapoor.

More than her acting calibre, Taal is better remembered for her dances. A trained Bharata Natyam dancer, Ash played a singer and dancer in this film.

The music, scored by A R Rahman, soared to the top of the charts, but the film did not go too well with Indian audiences. It was a hit, however, with Indians in the US and UK.
