A few years ago, a singer told rediff.com: "There is a gap between the heart and brain. That is where the sound box lies. Some sing from their heart, others use their brain. But all singers in my list [of favourites] apply both their heart and brain.'" That singer was Asha Bhosle. It must be special to be Asha Bhosle, gifted to have an ageless voice like hers. She is the voice that her father, Master Dinanath Mangeshkar, trained, along with her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar. Like her sister, she began her career as a child artiste and later branched into singing for films. Her rich, versatile voice mastered the saat surs (seven melodies) easily. She has sung for countless actresses, from Nutan to Waheeda Rehman to Rekha to Urmila Matondkar to Shamita Shetty. And through those many decades, her magic has always been constant. Asha Bhosle turns 70 September 8. rediff.com salutes the legend and invites you to join us in the celebration! Editor: Sita Menon. Design: Uday Kuckian. Production: Ronjita Kulkarni, Sukanya Verma.
