Lankan aircraft attack rebel camp, kill seven

E-Mail this report to a friend

Sri Lankan Air Force jets attacked a camp of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in eastern Trincomalee district, killing at least seven guerrillas, the government said on Saturday.

It said the attack on the camp at Kokkatti was carried out on Wednesday. Radio transmissions of the LTTE, monitored by the security forces, had indicated that at least 20 other guerrillas had been wounded in the air raid.

In the past few weeks, fighting in Sri Lanka's war-torn north and east has been sporadic after a spate of bloody battles when the LTTE was on a push to recapture its former stronghold, the northern Jaffna peninsula.

The military said the use of new weapons and counterattacks helped blunt the push by the LTTE, which it said was facing an acute manpower shortage after months of severe fighting.
