India denies aiding Lankan Army

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Vaiko met Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Defence Minister George Fernandes in New Delhi and discussed the situation in the Jaffna peninsula.

Vaiko said he drew their attention to press reports about Indian defence forces supplying radar pictures about Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam locations to the Sri Lankan Army, providing technical expertise to counter Tamil insurgents, and sending former Punjab police chief K P S Gill to undertake counter-insurgency operations.

Vajpayee and Fernandes, however, denied Indian involvement in Sri Lankan affairs, he said.

Vaiko said he was satisfied with the cautious approach adopted by the government in dealing with the situation.

The MDMK leader also met Israeli diplomat Dan Stav and appraised him of human rights violations by Lankan defence forces against civilians.

Vaiko said the diplomat assured him he would convey his views to his government. Israel has been providing arms and fighter jets to the Lankan government to fight Tamil insurgents.
