Sri Lanka formally invites Norway to revive peace efforts

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Thursday formalised Oslo's role in the island's peace process in talks with his Norwegian counterpart.

Wickremesinghe said he telephoned his Norwegian counterpart Kjell Magne Bondevik officially extending an invitation to revive Oslo's efforts to help bring the rebel LTTE to the negotiating table.

"The response I got was very positive," Wickremesinghe said adding that a Norwegian delegation was likely to visit Sri Lanka in January.

The government was also awaiting a response from the International Committee of the Red Cross on a request to take messages between the government and the LTTE.

The LTTE and government forces are observing a bilateral truce since Christmas Eve. There have been no violations so far.
