Dara Singh, the prime accused in the murder of Australian missionary Graham Stuart Staines and his two minor sons, has moved the Supreme Court for bail.
Singh's counsel, Bana Behari Mohanty, said on Wednesday that he had filed a bail application in the Supreme Court last week, following his failure to get bail from the district courts and the Orissa high court.
"We hope the Supreme Court would grant bail to Singh," said Mohanty.
Singh and 12 others accused of Staines' murder in Mayurbhanj district in January 1999 are currently lodged at the Jharpada jail.
The case has been tried in the district and sessions court since March 1.
The Central Bureau of Investigation, which probed the crime, has already produced nearly 15 witnesses to prove the murder.
Some of the witnesses have even identified Singh in the court.
Keonjhar police arrested Dara Singh after a yearlong manhunt in the forests bordering Bihar.
Trial in the case was deferred several times for various reasons, including the illness of some of the accused.
