Having decided to enter into talks with the LTTE, the Sri Lankan government wants to ascertain the mood among the Sri Lankan Tamils living in refuge camps in Tamil Nadu.
The Sri Lankan government is reportedly considering the return of the refugees as a yardstick for measuring the return of normalcy in the Tamil-dominated areas of the country.
Minister for Rehabilitation and Refugees Jayalath Jayewardene flew in to Chennai on Tuesday to meet the refugees.
He will be in the city for about a week, during which he hopes to call on Governor P S Ramamohan Rao and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
He thanked both the state and central governments for taking care of the Sri Lankan Tamils.
With the improvement of the ground situation and the ongoing developmental works in the war-torn areas, there are indications about an early return of the refugees to their homes, Jayewardene said.
