A 25-year old army jawan on Thursday committed suicide by shooting himself with his service riffle inside the Fort St.George in Chennai, police said.
Rajendra Singh of Uttar Pradesh, who was attached to the Military Police wing, reportedly shot himself in the head while on duty at one of the defence wings in the Fort St George, which also houses the state Secretariat.
The jawan, who was rushed to the Government General Hospital, succumbed to injuries, police said.
The reason for him taking the extreme step was not known and police are investigating.
