Citigroup has appointed Shirish Apte and Stephen Bird as chief executive officers for the financial services entity's Asia-Pacific operations, with immediate effect.

Apte will be responsible for Southern Asia and Bird for Northern Asia.

The appointments come after Citi's chief executive for the Asia-Pacific region Ajay Banga announced last month that he would step down. Banga would be joining global payment firm MasterCard.

Apte and Bird have been appointed as chief executive for the Asia-Pacific region, effective immediately, Citi said in a statement.

The banking behemoth has roped in Shengman Zhang as chairman for the Asia-Pacific operations.

The two executives would have joint responsibilities for Asia Pacific's overall performance, strategy and execution, the statement said.

In Asia-Pacific, Zhang, a former World Bank executive, would be responsible for forging and expanding relationships with clients, regulators, government officials and employees across the region.
