East Bengal trounce Tollygunge

Defending champions East Bengal toyed with a weak defence to trounce Tollygunge Aggragami 5-1 in a fifth National Football League match at the Salt Lake stadium in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Dipankar Roy scored two goals while striker Omalaja Olalekin, Bijen Singh and Jose Carlos netted a goal each for East Bengal in a lop-sided contest, which saw the glamour club dictate terms from the beginning.

After being at the receiving end of the East Bengal assaults for most part of the contest, striker Moses Owira scored the consolation goal for Tollygunge early in the second session.

Despite leading by a comfortable 3-0 margin at the interval, the defending champions continued to torment their hapless opponents with Dipankar Roy slamming in two goals in the span of two minutes to make a mockery of the Tollygunge defence.

The goal deluge came to an end only after East Bengal were reduced to ten players midway through the second session, after Deepak Mondal was sent off.

Mondal was shown the red card by referee Ravi Shankar for deliberately 'handling' a goal-bound ball and preventing a certain goal with the goalkeeper out of position.

With this emphatic victory, East Bengal improved their position on the points table, securing 29 points from 19 matches while Tollygunge have 20 points from their 19 outings.
