Qamar wins gold in boxing
India's Mohammed Ali Qamar clinched the gold medal in the light flyweight category of the
boxing competition at the 17th Commonwealth Games in Manchester on Saturday.
Qamar defeated England's Darren Langley with a 27-25 margin.
The Indian fought back magnificently in the final session to deservedly take the gold medal.
Qamar picked up the opening couple of points but Langley fought back to finish the first round on level terms at 7-7.
Langley produced a superb second round with a good right near the end of the session the highlight as he moved into a 14-9 advantage.
However, the Indian fought back strongly in the third and a strong right hand forced Langley to take a standing count.
Despite the count, Langley maintained his five-point lead to going into the final round.
However Qamar then produced a storming last round to outscore the Englishman 10-3.
In other boxing action, the much-hyped India-Pakistan clash in the 57kg category
was a one-sided affair as Hyder Ali of Pakistan used his better reach and reflexes to smother the diminutive Som Bahadur Pun.
Hyder Ali dominated Pun and kept increasing his lead every round. At the end of the third round, Hyderled by a comfortable 22-10 margin.
Pun managed just one point in the last round and had to settle for a silver medal. Hyder Ali claimed the first gold for the country in this games.
