An early goal by Rui Wanderley Weis enabled Vasco Sports Club get the better of their Goa mates Salgaocar by a solitary goal in the Oil PSU-seventh National Football League at the Nehru stadium in Fatorda, Goa, on Saturday.
The victory boosted Vasco's morale ahead of their next match against Mahindra United in Goa on December 11.
Vasco have 10 points from five matches, while Salgaocar, who suffered their second defeat, have seven from as many
matches.
Vasco played an attacking game in the first-half and scored in the fifth minute. Medio Menino Fernandes, from the centre, passed to striker Rui Weis, who positioned himself well and essayed a rasping drive that found the net, beating Salgaocar goalkeeper Juje Siddi all ends up.
The early goal gave Vasco more confidence as they attacked the Salgaocar citadel repeatedly, with their midfield dominating the proceedings.
In the 18th minute, they had another chance but a Marcos Pereira cross from the left saw Rui Weis failing to connect. The ball went to an unmarked Peter Rodrigues, who was unable to score from close.
Few minutes later, Marcos himself had a chance to consolidate the lead but his chip from inside the box missed
the target narrowly.
Vasco's defence kept the rival strikers Dudu and Sunday quiet with tight marking. The Salgaocar players tried long passes to feed their upfront but to no avail as Vasco defenders Selwyn Fernandes and Seby Dias proved too strong to get past.
