Vasco shock Mohun Bagan
Powered by the brilliance of Brazilian Rui Wanderely Weis, Vasco, Goa, got the better of former champions Mohun Bagan 2-1 in a 12th round match in the Tata National Football league, in Margao, Goa, on Monday.
The ace striker scored once in each half to flatten the Kolkata giants.
The teams had drawn 1-1 in their first leg match in Kolkata.
With this win Vasco jumped to the third spot on the league table with
21 points.
Vasco could have won by much bigger margin had they capitalised on a couple of scoring chances, especially in the second session. Though first half was played at a fast pace, it did not rise
up to expections as play was confined to midfield for a major part.
Vasco came near scoring in the 10th minute but Peter Rodrigues's fine try landed straight into the
hands of Bagan goalkeeper Rastidar Ghosh.
Vasco went into the lead in the 25th minute through Wanderely Weis, who nicely headed the ball into the net following a flag-kick by Satish Minz.
The lead was, however, shortlived as Bagan's Nigerian striker Abdul Latif Sereki levelled the score in the 33rd minute off a pass from Brazilian Jose Ramirez Barreto -- 1-1.
After the change over, the Goa team played with renewed vigour and increased their lead in the 56th minute through Wanderely Weis off a penalty. Referee Manuel Pereira awarded Vasco the penalty when Debjit Ghosh handled the ball in the danger zone. Wanderely made no mistake from the 'spot'.
Inspired by the lead, Vasco continued to attack vigorously and
could have gone up by another two goals but they failed to capitalise on chances that came their way.
In the 60th minute, Wanderely Weis's power-packed header was
smartly fisted over by Ghosh for an abortive corner, following a cross by Abhay Kumar.
Then, in the 80th minute, Marcos Pereira missed a sitter after being put through by Abhay Kumar .He had only the goalkeeper to beat but shot wide.
