Pakistan wins Six-nation title

Pakistan beat Australia 4-3 in extra-time to win the Six-nation invitational men's hockey tournament at the Bukit Jalil stadium, in Kuala Lumpur, on Saturday.

The Aussies, chasing from the outset after Pakistan captain Muhammad scored in the third minute, fought back on two occasions to tie the match at three goals apiece at the end of full time. However, Pakistan scored the golden goal six minutes into extra time to take the title.

In the play-offs, The Netherlands defeated New Zealand 10-2 to finish third and Japan came back from the brink of defeat to upset hosts Malaysia 2-1 in extra-time to finish fifth.

Pakistan began the match in emphatic fashion with a shot on goal in the first minute and went into half- time with a lead of two goals to one.

The Australians attacked in the second half and were able to tie the match at three-all thanks to an excellent field goal from the striker Matthew Smith with only two minutes remaining in normal time.

The Australian team entered the Pakistan defensive circle 27 times, but was able to create only four shots on goal to Pakistan’s nine from 21 attacks.

The match went into extra-time with the Australians attacking immediately, but man-of-the-match, veteran Pakistan forward Shahbaz Ahmad made an extraordinary run on the left before passing to the top scorer Kashif Jawad, who converted the ‘golden goal.’
