Salgaocar beat Vasco
in exciting match

A brace by striker Alvito D'Cunha helped Salgaocar down a 10-strong Vasco 3-2 and avenge their first leg defeat in the Tata National Football League, in Margao, Goa, on Saturday.

In an exciting ecounter, D'Cunha scored in the 28th and 72nd minutes while substitute Bruno Coutinho added another goal in the 86th.

Vasco went all out in the closing stages and reduced the margin through Rui Wanderly Weis (85th) and Marcos Pereira (87th).

Vasco enjoyed the upper hand for a better part of the match and had many scoring chances but failed to capitalise on the numerous chances that came their way.

Wanderly, who did not play in the last match against East Bengal, having received two yellow cards, was the live wire in the Vasco attack. He was unlucky twice. Once his try hit the crossbar and went out, and later Kalyan Chaubey blocked a shot from close.

Chaubey put in a fine performance under the bar as he denied Abhay Kumar and Marcos from scoring.

Vasco were reduced to ten men midway into the second half after Abhay Kumar got his second booking from referee Walter Pereira for a foul on Eugene Gray.

With this win, Salgaocar moved to 32 points from 18 matches and are on par with Zee Churchill and Mohan Bagan, who have played one match less. But Salgaocar, with a better goal diference, are now in second place.

With their second successive defeat, Vasco's chances of winning the title suffered a severe blow. They are now fourth in the table with 31 points.
