Anand Amritraj, Piperno named
captains for Asian Games

Former tennis star Anand Amritraj and Enrico Piperno will replace Ramesh Krishnan and C G K Bhupathi as captains of the men's and women's teams respectively for the forthcoming Asian Games in Busan, starting on September 29.

The All India Tennis Association made the changes after Krishnan and Bhupathi had made themselves unavailable for the Games citing personal reasons.

"Anand is one of the stalwarts of yesteryears and a reputed tennis brain. And he is still playing active tennis.

"He had expressed his desire to be associated with the Indian team before and so when Ramesh withdrew we appointed him," AITA president Anil Khanna said in Delhi on Saturday.

"Enrico had already been the women's team captain. Since Bhupathi was working with the juniors we had asked him to captain the team at Busan, but now that he is not available Enrico has come in again," Khanna said.

Khanna clarified that the competitive matches that the men and women would be playing in the coming days would serve as a good preparation.

"The men's team will be playing the Davis Cup and the women will be playing the ITF matches in Hyderabad. We have also asked Enrico to be in Hyderabad this week," he said.
