When a manuever concludes succesfully or the opponent gives up, the victor wins a point (Ippon). When judges conclude that a manuever, even if not completed succesfully, causes some damage to the opponent, the competitor gains a half-point (Waza-ari). Two half-points make a point. If victory or defeat is not settled within the specified time, judges decide the issue based on the number of half-points, "Effectuality" and "Effectivity."
