Temple attack aimed at creating
communal divide: Advani

Observing that Pakistan-sponsored terrorist groups were behind the attack on Raghunath temple in Jammu, Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani on Monday told the Lok Sabha that the incident was part of a 'deliberate design' to create a communal divide in Jammu and Kashmir.

"People of the state, we are sure will defeat this design," he said adding that the Centre remained committed to providing all assistance to the state government in its fight against terrorism.

He indicated the government suspected the Lashkar-e-tayiba to be behind the attack.

"Terrorist groups, being mentored from across the international border and Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, have struck once again - this time in the famous Raghunath temple of Jammu," Advani said in a suo moto statement.

Noting that there has been a series of terrorist attacks in the last three days, Advani said these "make one speculate whether it is a mere coincidence that these incidents have occurred just when the process of government formation has been completed in Pakistan."

Monitoring of the communication network of terrorists indicated that the Jammu attack was the handiwork of Al Mansooran, which is a proxy for the Lashkar-e-Tayiba, he said.

Curfew has been imposed in Jammu town as a precautionary measure, he said. The Centre has also sent a team under Minister of State for Home I D Swami and Director General of the CRPF to Jammu, he informed the members.

J&K Governor G C Saxena and Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had earlier visited the temple and the hospital to take stock of the situation.

A meeting of prominent citizens was also being held in Jammu at the initiative of the chief minister to seek the people's cooperation in fighting terrorism in the state, Advani said.
