UF to contest 350 Lok Sabha seats

The United Front says it will contest around 350 seats all over the country.

Briefing the media after a three-hour UF core committee meeting which discussed at length the combine's state-wise prospects, Front spokesman S Jaipal Reddy said the alliance has emerged as the single largest political formation.

The Front, Reddy declared, would have no truck with the Congress in the Lok Sabha election.

Asked about Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's statement that he did not consider the Congress an 'untouchable', Reddy said the defence minister was misquoted. ''You can contact Mulayam Singh for a clarification,'' he said.

The Front, he said, would have a common election campaign which would commence at the month-end with all the constituents jointly addressing public rallies in various parts of the country.

UF sources said Mulayam Singh had told the core committee that his party could perform well even without the Congress.

With several Janata Dal and Left members opposing a tie-up with the Rashtriya Janata Dal in Bihar, it was decided that the issue would be taken up at the next core committee meeting to be held on December 16.

Sources also expressed confidence that the Dravida Munnetra Kazagham and the Tamil Maanila Congress would stick together in Tamil Nadu and all the irritants between them had been sorted out.

The committee is expected to finalise the UF's manifesto at the next meeting.
