Mercedes-Benz India on Wednesday announced its foray into the pre-owned car business under its 'Proven Exclusivity' programme, launched globally last year.

With a car park of 30,000 units over the last 15 years, Mercedes-Benz expects the used-car business to contribute 10-15 per cent to its total sales.

"Comprehensive evaluation and refurbishment criteria, scientific tools for audit and inspection of cars not older than six years, as well as six months' manufacturer-backed warranty for a pre-owned car will result in more people owning a Mercedes car, now. At the same time, customers can also drive in their existing vehicles and drive out with their new Mercedes-Benz by utilising the trade-in route," Mercedes-Benz India MD and CEO Wilfried Aulbur said.

While Aulbur declined to comment on the pricing of pre-owned cars, experts said a 2003 SLK model driven for over 28,000 km could be bought for Rs 20 lakh, compared to Rs 48.4 lakh for a new one. Similarly, an E-Class of 2006 driven for 19,000 km could be bought for Rs 25 lakh against the fresh price of Rs 45.9 lakh.

The company, which started testing the market for pre-owned cars from May, has sold over 150 units.
