Signalling an improvement in the strained American labour market, US private companies added as many as 32,000 new jobs in April.

"Non-farm private employment increased 32,000 from March to April, 2010," according to the ADP National Employment Report released on Wednesday.

The projected change in employment from February to March was revised from a decline of 23,000 to an increase of 19,000.

According to the report, the revised estimates for change in employment from January to February showed a modest increase of 3,000.

"Thus, employment has increased for three straight months, albeit only modestly. The slow pace of improvement from February through April is consistent with the pause in the decline of initial unemployment claims that occurred during the winter months," the report said.

The latest ADP report has not included temporary hiring made by the US government for census activities last month.

Despite the national economy expanding at a healthy pace of over three per cent in the first quarter of 2010, the employment market continues to be sluggish, with the jobless rate hovering above nine per cent.

Going by the report, employment in the services sector climbed by 50,000 in April, while in the goods-producing segment, it rose by 18,000.

The ADP report is based on employment derived from an anonymous subset of roughly 500,000 US business clients. In the first three months of 2010, the US economy grew 3.2 per cent on the back of increased consumer spending.
