Hussain bids adieu
Hussain was a combative skipper, one who often produced his best in the face of stinging criticism.
His batting in the one-dayers was always open to criticism as was his position at number three. The critics had been baying for his blood and the chants among the press had reached a feverish pace. He responded by cracking a century in the NatWest Series final against India in 2002 and directed a few choice words towards the media centre.
On May 4, 2003, England bowed out of the World Cup and Hussain announced he was quitting the one-day game.
Ian Botham, a fellow former England captain, said: "I'm not surprised by Nasser's decision and I wish him all the best in retirement. I think it's entirely up to him. It's his career and his retirement. You can't win whatever you do when it comes to retiring."
