Hussain bids adieu

All through the years all that the opposition managed to break were his fingers, not his spirit.

Nicknamed 'poppadum' for the regularity with which he had his fingers broken, Hussain kept coming back with performances that lifted his side out of trouble with regularity.

Whether it was the double century, which sparked England's hopes of regaining the Ashes in 1997, the century in Kandy against Sri Lanka, the one-day century against India in the NatWest finals in 2002 or the recent century in what turned out to be his last Test against New Zealand at the Lord's, Hussain always hit back at those who wrote him off.

Michael Vaughan said: "I have been privileged to share a dressing room with Nasser as both a player and a captain. His focus, his preparation and the passion he showed in wearing an England shirt are qualities that I really admire and I know I speak for every England player in wishing him all the best for the future."
