"The Cruze has been receiving rave reviews since its recent debut in some other markets. We expect it to perform well against the established D-segment players," General Motors India president and managing director Karl Slym told reporters in Mumbai.

The company has rolled out the car with a 2.0 litre diesel engine in two different variants. It claims that the car would give a mileage of 18.3 kilometre per litre, according to the Automotive Research Association of India standards.

The Cruze is currently being rolled out in many countries across the globe.

"GM's investments in manufacturing the Cruze in India is a demonstration of our sustained commitment to making Chevrolet the most admired and preferred vehicle brand in this country," Slym added.

"Chevrolet has become a driving force in India's vehicle market," said P Balendran, vice president, GM India.

The company had earlier said that the diesel version of Cruze would be followed with the roll out of a 1.8 litre petrol variant in the months to come.

GM India had also said that it would go ahead with the launch of its long-expected mini car, named and developed on 'Beat' platform by end of this year. The car is expected to be priced about Rs 400,000.

Besides, GM India has geared up to introduce its small car Spark with a 800cc petrol engine in 2010.
