Hussain bids adieu

Controversially chosen ahead of Michael Atherton, then another emerging young batsman, the 22-year-old hit the headlines on debut in 1989-'90 when he played both the innings of the fifth Test of the series in Antigua with a broken wrist.

96 Tests and 5764 runs later, Hussain capped a career which makes him the finest English skipper after Mike Brearley.

Leading England to 17 wins in 45 Tests as captain, he scripted one of England's finest phases as they entered the new millennium.

A first series victory against the West Indies at home since 1969 was followed by a series win in Pakistan after a gap of 40 years.

Former England skipper Graham Gooch said: "Nasser has been a fantastic batsman for Essex and England and will be a big loss to cricket. He is a highly determined and proud cricketer who has performed with great distinction as both captain and player."
